Connie Vetter arrived in Charlotte in 1993 as a young graduate from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston. In this interview, Ms. Vetter shares her experiences in Charlotte as a young lesbian in pursuit of law work and female community. Raised in an educated, middle-class family in Ohio, Ms. Vetter discusses her early memories with gender performance, race, and sexuality that eventually led to her coming out of the closet in 1985. As a decorated LGBTQ lawyer, Ms. Vetter reflects on the gay and lesbian history of Charlotte, highlighting important local LGBTQ activists and organizations that have and continue to push Charlotte in the direction of inclusion.
