Kalei Woodford oral history interview, 2020 January 30
Description
UNC Charlotte senior Kalei Woodford discusses her experiences on April 30 2019, and reflects on the subsequent campus community responses to the tragic shootings of that day. Despite having spent the semester studying abroad, Ms. Woodford was on campus in close vicinity to the Kennedy building when the shooting happened. She describes how she and others caught in the commotion were directed to an area between the Reece and Colvard buildings, where they watched as police, firefighters, and other responders poured onto campus while panicked students poured out of buildings in the opposite direction. She reflects on the shock and grave concern for friends that she and other students shared, and notes in particular one student who had been in the classroom where the shooting occurred and whom Ms. Woodford was able to assist with a minor injury. Ms. Woodford discusses her concerns about laws governing gun ownership and expresses admiration for youth movements that have organized in opposition to gun violence following recent school shootings.
