2001 Coca Cola 600
The two sub-collections in this collection document different aspects--a press conference and the purse announcement for the race--of the 2001 Coca-Cola 600, a Winston Cup series event held at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 27, 2001 in Charlotte, North Carolina. This race was the 42nd running of this event and the twelfth race of the Winston Cup season. Jeff Burton won first place for Roush Racing. The other top ten competitors were Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte, Jimmy Spencer, Ricky Rudd, Dale Jarrett, Ward Burton, and Jeremy Mayfield. Tony Stewart successfully accomplished “double duty” as he competed in the Indianapolis 500 on the same day. Stewart started at the end of the field because he missed the mandatory drivers’ meeting before the race. There were 28 lead changes and a margin of victory of 3.190 seconds. The average speed was 138.107 mph; the pole speed was 185.217 mph. The drivers’ purse money was $3,626,124.
