1979 Off the Track Events

1979 NMPA Convention
The images in this collection document events at a 1979 meeting of the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA), an organization for members of the media who cover motorsports in print, television, and radio. The meeting took place in Charleston, South Carolina. At the 1979 meeting, NMPA bestowed Cale Yarborough with the Richard Petty Driver of the Year award, an award that recognizes the season’s most outstanding driver, for the third year in a row. Alexis Lera of the NASCAR News Bureau and Purolator won the Joe Littlejohn Award, an award that recognizes individual(s) or an organizations for outstanding service to the NMPA as selected by the president. The organization honored David Pearson with the Most Popular Driver Award.
