Haywood Community College, part 1
Description
Harvey Gantt delivers a campaign speech at Haywood Community College. Gantt thanks the crowd and introduces his wife, Cindy, and talks about her support. Gantt says that he has been listening to people across North Carolina, and issues they care about include economic insecurity, seniors, the cost of medical care, and the environment. Gantt criticizes his opponent, Jesse Helms, for wanting to close the Department of Education. Gantt says that the key to the American Dream is education, and he supports student loans, tax deductions for tuition, tax credits per child, job security, and portable pensions. He criticizes Helms for voting to help companies raid their pension funds. Gantt talks about his support for tax deductions for job training, equal pay for equal work, and the minimum wage. He says that he wants job creation but not in exchange for corporate welfare and environmental degradation. Gantt criticizes Helms for voting to cut Medicare and Social Security. He concludes by telling the crowd to be vocal in their support and to encourage other people to vote. The speech is followed by a question and answer session, where an audience member asks about campaign finance reform before the recording ends.
