Manteo
Description
Harvey Gantt delivers a campaign speech to Democrats in Manteo. He is introduced by Clarence Skinner, Vice Chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, and by an unknown woman. Gantt tells the audience that people are giving up on the American Dream and politicians are not dealing with the issues that people care about, including education, the cost of college, job training, protecting pensions, job security, the cost of health insurance, and Social Security and Medicare. Gantt says that these are worthwhile programs that should be protected, but his opponent, Jesse Helms, is willing to cut them. Gantt supports investing in Head Start and Smart Start to give every child an equal start, and says they will prevent costs in the future. Gantt says that every child who finishes high school should have the opportunity to go further, and we should invest in these young people, not shut down the Department of Education like Helms wants to do. Concludes with a question and answer session, with topics including K-12 education and the tobacco industry.
