Shirley A. Hunter, PhD, CGFM, is a full-time Clinical Professor of Accounting in the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte. She is a Commissioned Foreign Service Officer with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). She has worked overseas for USAID for more than 20 years as a Financial Management Officer. Most recent assignments include serving as the Deputy Financial Controller to USAID/West Bank & Gaza and working on the earthquake reconstruction project for USAID/Haiti. In 1999, she took a sabbatical from USAID to obtain her PhD in Accounting from Texas A&M University in 2003. She then taught Accounting, consecutively for seven years, at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, Tufts University the Fletcher School, and Northeastern University. Dr. Hunter has also worked in the banking, insurance, and manufacturing sectors. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger and Senegal. Her research examines variants of capital markets in emerging economies; she has published in several journals. She has a MBA from the University of Illinois and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.
