Ronald E. (Ron) Smelser, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science and Senior Associate Dean in The William States Lee College of Engineering, holds a Ph. D. from Carnegie Mellon University, a S.M.M.E. from MIT, and a B.S.M.E. from the University of Cincinnati. He has held faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Idaho and an adjunct positions at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, he has nearly 15 years of research experience at US Steel Research Laboratory, Alcoa Technical Center, Concurrent Technologies Corporation, and as a visiting research scientist at Colorado State University. His publications include three co-authored or edited books and over 50 refereed journal and conference papers in continuum mechanics, fracture mechanics, ductile failure, solidification, materials process-structure property relations, deformation processing, and engineering educational pedagogy. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ohio, Idaho, and North Carolina.
