In this interview John Miller, Jr., Superintendent of Green Acres Rest Home in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1961 to 1982, describes what life was like at the Mecklenburg County Home (later Green Acres Rest Home) during his childhood years when his father was superintendent. He provides background information about his parents' lives and families and his own education and explains how his father came to be involved with the home. Topics discussed include farming and canning operations, housing accommodations, WPA contributions to the property, mealtimes, nurses and other employees, County Commission governance, and community perception of the home. Miller also discusses the differences between the black and white facilities and recounts stories of particular residents, their pastimes, and endeavors.
