Walter Cavin was a 74-year-old man at the time of interview, which took place in his home in Stanley, North Carolina. He was born in Mount Holly, North Carolina in 1928 or 1929. He was employed as a station chemist at Duke Power, River Bend Steam Station.

Walter Cavin discusses moving to Stanley, North Carolina as a child in 1936 and the natural environment of the region. He talks about his father's work as a postmaster, with various banks, and his service in the Army during both World Wars. Mr. Cavin discusses land use and development in Stanley, including at Stanley Creek and Hoover Pond, and the families who have lived in the area over time. He also talks about other topics relating to the land, including gold mining and floods.
