Rod Rich and Lynnsy Logue discuss Sonic Man, the superhero Ms. Logue created for WCCB-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1977. Mr. Rich explains how he and Ms. Logue both worked for WCCB-TV, as a camera-person and consultant respectively, when the station lost its affiliation and became an independent station. Mr. Rich looks back fondly on the first episode of Sonic Man, when the show asked for children to call in to the station. They received a much bigger response than they believed they would get, enough to overwhelm the phones. Mr. Rich and Ms. Logue reflect that Sonic Man's actor (and longtime weather anchor for NBC Charlotte Today), Larry Sprinkle, was glad that the show was successful but he did not like the costume he was forced to wear. Mr. Rich discusses the creation of Sonic Man, an alien with his own language who encouraged children's creativity and education. Ms. Logue explains how she created Sonic language, combining people's names with traits she associated with them. Ms. Logue discusses her legal battle to prevent Sonic Man from being commercialized, which allowed it to be shared across networks to reach the most children possible.
